Excel Has One Champion, Seven All-American Finishes in Fargo

Excel Wrestling grabs one champion and seven All American finishes at the Fargo USAW Freestyle and Greco National Championships. Connor Medbery, a long-time Colorado Excel wrestler won his second Fargo title defeating Cody Krumweide of Iowa 3-1, 2-0, in their heavyweight bout in Junior Freestyle. Medbery was also a runner up in the Junior Greco Roman division at heavyweight and will go on next season to compete at the University of Wisconsin. "It was awesome to see Connor win this past weekend. He has worked hard to get big and strong enough for the weight class and it was obvious that his hard work paid off for him this year. He's not only strong enough, his technique is outstanding for any weight class," said Excel Coach Steve Knight. From the Iowa Excel Junior Olympic Program, Alex Meyer of Southeast Polk had a phenomenal week, also achieving double All American status. Meyer lossed a close one in the finals of the Junior Greco at 160lbs and later placed 3rd in Junior Freestyle defeating Mark Martin (Ohio) Dec 1-4,2-2,6-0.
"Alex Meyer has probably come farther than any of our high school wrestlers in any one of our Junior Olympic Programs. He had put in the work and continues to improve. He can't get enough and that's what has put him where he is today. The college program that lands this guy will be very fortunate. He has quite a future ahead of him," commented Knight. A couple other Iowa Excel wrestlers who also walked away with All American honors were Excel's Trevor Murano of Dallas Center, IA, who placed 4th in the Cadet Freestyle division at 91lbs and Mason Miller of Winterset, IA who claimed 3rd place in the Junior Freestyle division at 98lbs. Former Colorado Excel wrestler Duke Pickett also placed in the Junior Greco Roman division at 152lbs taking 5th. Pickett grew up in Colorado where he wrestled with Coach Knight and the Excel Program there. He now resides in Woodbury, Virginia and will go to wrestle at Cornell University next fall. Working closely with his dad this past week in Fargo was Steve's son Evan. "Our Excel guys really wrestled well this past week. Fargo is by far the toughest tournament in the country and they showed they can not only compete with the best wrestlers in the U.S. - they can win and dominate." said Evan Knight.

Individual Excel Results

Junior Freestyle

- Mason Miller (IA) 98lbs 7-1 with a win over Gabe Gibson (Virginia) for 3rd place. Miller only loss came to the eventual champion.

- Alex Meyer (IA) 160lbs finished with a 9-1 record, with his only loss coming to the eventual champion and OW Alex Dieringer of WI. Meyer won his 3rd place match over with Mark Martin (Ohio) Dec 1-4,2-2,6-0

- Connor Medbery (CO) 285lbs won over Cody Krumwiede (Iowa) Dec 3-1,2-0 in the finals.

Cadet Freestyle

- Trevor Murano (IA) 91lbs. went 5-2 finishing 4th.

Junior Greco

-Duke Pickett (CO-VA) 152lbs. went 9-2 finishing 5th over Logan Addis (Arizona) 2-0,ID

- Connor Mebery (CO) 285lbs won 9 matches at 285 losing to Parker Betts (Minnesota) in the Greco Finals, Dec 1-0,2-0

-Alex Meyer (IA) 160lbs lost to Geordan Speiller (Florida) Dec 3-0,3-1 in the Greco Finals after winning 8 straight matches.
