WRESTLING NEWS: Havens Wins 2007 World Grappling Championships in Turkey |
 |
|
Malcolm Havens recently won the 2007 Grappling World Championships at 92kg, 202lbs. held in Antalya, Turkey in early September. Malcolm has been training for quite sometime in submission fighting and grappling. He has been mentored by Sheldon Marr of Grappler's Edge who was a member of the World Team Grappling Staff and runs Grappler's Edge in Denver, CO. Malcolm qualified for the World Championships by winning the US National Grappling Championships in Las Vegas earlier in the summer.
Prior to making the commitment to train for Grappling, Havens wrestled for the University of Wyoming. His senior season, he won the WAC Conference at 197lbs. and qualified for the Division I NCAA Championships. Havens trained for several years through middle school and high school with Excel Wrestling and has competed for Team Excel at several national freestyle events and has also coached on their summer camp staff.
"Malcolm is one of a kind," said Steve Knight, Team Excel Coach. "He and his dad drove for years from Parker up north of Denver to Excel practices. He was never afraid to put in the time and work hard! It's a thrill for me to see him have this kind of experience! He comes from a quite a family and I believe that is a big part of his success. Like so many wrestling families, Dan and his wife Laura do everything in their power to support their children. All of the Havens family, grandparents too, have been special friends to me and my family and our Excel Wrestling program. I'm just waiting to see what else is on the horizon for Malcolm." The future's bright!
Malcolm Havens has also competed over the years in bodybuilding, most recently taking third place in his respective weight class at the 2006 National Physique Committee Mid-USA Bodybuilding Championships. He runs his own Personal Training Program at Anytime Fitness in Parker, CO and plans to continue to compete in both Grappling and Bodybuilding. Congratulations Malcolm! |
