STEVE KNIGHT WORKS TO IMPLEMENT NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR EXCEL WRESTLING IN IOWA

Excel Wrestling, an official Junior Olympic Program under the leadership of USA Wrestling, the National Governing Body for Amateur Wrestling, is in the development stages for Central Iowa. Currently, Excel Wrestling runs year round training programs in four states - Colorado, Wyoming, Wisconsin and Missouri and has plans to begin their fifth national development program here in Iowa this spring, '07.

Former ISU Cyclone NCAA All American Steve Knight will run the program. Knight wrestled in his prep years for Clinton winning two state high school titles and three Junior National Titles. After earning All American honors and winning the Big 8 Championship, Knight stayed as an assistant coach at Iowa State and trained for the 1992 Olympics. He represented the US 14 times in international competition, winning a gold medal at the Pan Ams before traveling to Barcelona, Spain as an alternate/training partner for the 1992 Olympics.

He has been a member of the USA Wrestling National Coaching Staff for 12 years in Colorado, coaching many national teams abroad and working with wrestlers at the US Olympic Training Center. He has served on the US Olympic Staff, was the head coach for the 2004 Pan Ams and coached the 2005 World Cup. He is also one of the coaches for Real Pro Wrestling, coaching the New York Outrage team.

"It's good to be back in Iowa and I look forward to the development of a new program for Excel Wrestling. Central Iowa has a lot of great coaches and great programs and the more our high school wrestlers train in the off season, the better their chances will be of moving forward to the college level. Some say our program only attracts the die hard wrestlers and that may be true to some extent, but regardless, it helps these athletes to find that next level of achievement," said Knight.

The Iowa Excel Year Round Training Program will operate in two locations in Central Iowa, running spring, summer and fall programs. There will be an Ames location and a Des Moines location beginning this spring in mid March. In early June, the weekly summer program will begin with a fall session to follow. Working with Knight will be longtime friend and teammate, 2 x NCAA Champion Eric Voelker.
