  • Honoring: Cornell University Head Coach and former Team Excel wrestler Rob Koll

It is an honor to induct Rob Koll into the 2009 Excel Wrestling Hall of Heroes. Koll is Cornell University's Head Coach of 17 years. He has taken the "Big Red" to one of the top spots in the country over the past several years. Last year they placed second at the National Dual meet championships with wins over Iowa State, Ohio State and the University of Michigan. Currently Cornell University is ranked 3rd nationally by WIN Magazine.

Koll has followed in his father's footsteps. Bill Koll was a legendary coach, serving at the helm at Cornell College, Iowa State Teachers College before moving on to the Head Coaching position at Penn State University. Koll has done amazing things with the Cornell program receiving several "Coach of the Year" honors recently. Many believe he has literally set a new standard in wrestling among Ivy League univesities.

Wrestling-wise, Koll was unstoppable, one of few wrestlers to ever defeat such opponents as Dave Schultz and Kenny Monday. In college at the University of North Carolina, Koll won three conference titles for North Carolina and took home the NCAA championship at 158lbs in 1988. He was the most winning wrestler in North Carolina history as UNC's first four time NCAA All American. He went on to train and compete internationally with Team Foxcatcher out of Newtown Square, PA. He and Coach Knight were teammates and became good friends wrestling together in the early 90's. Koll won the Pan American Championships, along with two World Cup titles, wrestled on the US World Team and placed 5th in the 1989 Tokyo World Championships and was a 1992 US Olympic alternate.

Later in his career, he made one more run, wrestling for Team Excel. Rob wrestled for Team Excel's Olympic level club throughout 1997 and 1998, winning by tech fall over 4 x NCAA Champion Pat Smith at the World Team trials in 1998, not to mention several great wins over other young and upcoming greats. Koll finally unlaced his shoes at the age of 33 years with his longtime friend Steve Knight in his corner.

On behalf of the Excel Wrestling Board of Directors, it is an honor to welcome Coach Koll back to Iowa and we look forward to hearing his inspirational message at this year's Excel Hall of Heroes Banquet on November 15th.
