Honoring Larry Nugent

  • Honoring: Larry Nugent

It is with great pleasure that we induct USA Wrestling's Director of Development Larry Nugent into the 2009 Excel Wrestling "Hall of Heroes". Larry has left his mark on the wrestling community over the past 30 years and continues to be a leader within our sport for marketing and promotion. His endeavors have taken him from wrestler to coach to marketing, promoting and managing events as Director of Development with the USA Wrestling National Office in Colorado Springs, CO.

Larry grew up in Oregon and had an outstanding wrestling career. He was a 2x Oregon State High School Champion and a 2x NAIA All American for Southern Oregon University in Ashland. He went on to place in the top four twice in US Olympic trials competition. He was a 4x National Freestyle All American and one of only three US wrestlers to ever beat 2x Olympic Champion John Smith in freestyle competition.

As a college coach, he worked with over 30 NAIA and NCAA All Americans in less than 20 years. He coached on the NAIA level, NCAA Division III, and NCAA Division I levels as both an assistant and head coach. After 20 years in coaching, Larry moved on to USA Wrestling in 1998. For two years, he worked as the Assistant to the Executive Director and since 2000, he has served as the Director of Development.

In this role, Larry has been the driving force behind some of the largest fundraising events in wrestling including the New York City 2003 "Evening with Legends" Dinner, during the World Championships at Madison Square Gardens, the 2004 USA Wrestling - "Up the Glass Ceiling" at the NY Stock Exchange and several other major fundraising events in the past three or four years. The most recent effort being the "Fuel the Dream" drive to raise support for our US Olympic teams.

The Excel Wrestling Board of Directors would also like to thank Larry for all he has done with assistance and support of many past Excel "Hall of Heroes" Dinners. Your work and support of our organization has been greatly appreciated.

Thank you Larry and we look forward to honoring you and your wife Carrie at this year's event.
